FRIDAY, JULY 8.
PROGRAM # 7831 12:00 PM PT
Mexico Edition.
Scientists, businessmen and lawyers, led by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have been meeting in secret to plan the construction of a totally synthetic human genome, using a technique known as CRISPR, with gene drivers, according to ETC Group, an organization that monitors the use of technology and power globally. Members of the group reported that agro-industry already uses synthetic biology for the production and commercialization of substances such as vanilla or saffron, and it is also being considered for the extraction of hydrocarbon. However, they consider it unacceptable for this technique to be experimented with on live species and to attempt to imitate the human gene structure. Martha Elena Ramírez hosts Voz Pública from Mexico City.
Guests: Silvia Ribeiro and Verónica Villa, members, Grupo ETC, Mexico City; (fragment of taped speech) Silvia Ribeiro, Grupo ETC, Mexico City.
