PROGRAM # 7787 12:00 PM PT

Mexico Edition.

The community of San Miguel del Progreso, in Guerrero, was able to revoke two open-pit mining permits and get the Supreme Court to review the Mining Law which allows licenses to be given for 50 years. In that state, 24 percent of the territory is licensed for mining. Recently, the indigenous community Me’ Phaa filed a lawsuit, which cancelled the permit given to the Hochschild and Zalamera companies. The community argued that they had not been consulted and that the Mining Law legalizes the disposession of towns and the devastation of mountains. Martha Elena Ramírez hosts Voz Pública from Mexico City.

Guests: Armando Campos, environmentalist; Abel Barrera, founding director, Centro de Derechos Humanos de la Montaña, Tlachinollan, Guerrero; (segments of taped audio) Irma Aguilar, indigenous resident; Agapito Cantú Manuel, Comisario Municipal, and Valerio Amado Solano, president, Comisariado de Bienes Comunales de San Miguel del Progreso; Maribel González, Attorney, Tlachinollan; Taurino Carrasco Castro, resident, Guerrero.
