FRIDAY, JANUARY 22.
PROGRAM # 7702 12:00 PM PT
Mexico Edition.
Three reservoirs and dozens of canals are illegally taking water from the Yaqui River. The river provided water for forests and crops cultivated by the Yaqui tribe. Today, it is being used by hydroelectric companies, mining companies, private ranches, and the Sonora state capital Hermosillo. In Yaqui territory, a small bit of forest is barely surviving. There are no longer fish, the fauna of the area died, and the production of corn was reduced by a third. The people are defending themselves in court, and even though they have won cases, the water continues to be taken. Now, the Sonora Gas Pipeline is being built to feed more hydroelectric plants. Also in this edition, a resident of Milpa Alta tells the story of how water came to his community. Martha Elena Ramírez hosts Voz Pública from Mexico City.
Guests: (Pretaped Interviews) Mario Luna, Secretary, Yaqui Tribe, Vícam, Sonora; Conrado Cabello Amaya, San Pedro Atocpan, Milpa Alta, Mexico City.
