More than 500,000 permits for water use have been given by the federal government to companies all around the country, affecting the distribution of water and making the service more expensive, report affected residents and workers. Among the companies who have beneffitted are soda companies, agro-industry, mining companies, and real estate, all of which use water without informing the government how much they use or how much they pay for the service. And a similar situation is occurring with electricity, which is used by national and foreign companies. Protesters also question a debt for 10 billion pesos that the Mexico City government has with the World Bank to repair leaks and give maintenance to the network, but which was not reported to residents beforehand.
