FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4.
PROGRAM # 7667 12:00 PM PT
Mexico Edition.
As governor of the state of Mexico, current president of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto awarded construction of the Toluca-Naucalpan highway to a wealthy businessman, despite it affecting the land of 18 indigenous Otomí communities. Although there is a legal appeal in place to stop construction, the company Autovan has cut down forest and corn fields. The highway is being built with public funds, and the cost of expropriation is to be absorbed by the state and federal governments. Also in this edition, residents of the Guerrero mountains report that two years after the landslides caused by storms Ingrid and Manuel, the companies responsible for rebuilding roads, houses and schools have left the job unfinished, and at least 27 communities need to relocate. Martha Elena Ramírez hosts Voz Pública from Mexico City.
Guests: (Pretaped interviews) Janeth Ramírez, Centro de Derechos Humanos Ceferino Ladrillero, State of Mexico; Anthropologist Abel Barrera, director of Centro de Derechos Humanos de la Montaña Tlachinollan, Tlapa, Guerrero.
