Friday_673x324FRIDAY, JULY 31.
PROGRAM # 7577 12:00 PM PT

Mexico Edition.

With the consent of the Mexican government, the Spanish company Mareña Renovable is preparing to install a wind farm with 132 wind trubines, invading part of the urban area of Juchitán, Oaxaca. Opposing organizations say this project will displace people and affect the almost 100,000 residents of this Zapotec town, because in order to build it, the company plans to fill in springs and swamps, affecting the region’s ecosystem. The grops accuse the government of only simulating a public consultation, to then take the territory away from the community, because the permits and project are already approved. Martha Elena Ramírez hosts the program Voz Pública from Mexico City.

Guests: (pretaped interviews) Carlos Sánchez Martínez, member of Totopo Community Radio and Asamblea Popular del Pueblo Juchiteco; Rodrigo Peñaloza, Asamblea de Pueblos Indígenas del Istmo, en Defensa de la Tierra y el Territorio; Fernando N., Biology Department of UNAM, FUNDAR, Centro de Análisis e Investigación, Ciudad de México.
