Sixth Mass Extinction Under Way. Also, New and Clean Farming.

Wednesday_673x324WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23
PROGRAM # 8138 12:00 PM PST.

Sixth Mass Extinction Under Way.

In the most comprehensive study of its kind, scientists are warning that Earth is entering its sixth mass extinction of plants and animals. This “biological annihilation” is more severe than previously thought and up to three quarters of all species could disappear. The lead author of the landmark study has been invited to this program to discuss the causes and possible actions to remedy or mitigate this catastrophic event. On other news, on the eve of a mejor announcement by the US Secretary of the Interior about the fate of 21 national monuments, community leaders in California’s Central Valley are urging for protection of Giant Sequoia National Monument, home to the largest trees on Earth, against the ambitions of the timber industry.

Guest: Dr. Gerardo Ceballos, Ecology Professor, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City.

New and Clean Farming. In response to the contamination, higher food prices and health issues associated with modern agribusiness, environmental leaders are advocating for new approaches to farming. They seek to empower family and traditional farmers to develop a system of sustainable agriculture that reduces the use of pesticides, helps achieve food sovereignty, and helps end hunger and poverty in rural areas. An internationally-renowned agroecology leader examines this social movement.

Guest: Dr. Miguel Altieri, Professor of Agroecology, University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, CA.
