PROGRAM # 8028 12:00 PM PST.
“Worse than Flint.”
In a case of massive lead contamination once described “worse than Flint,” thousands of people and their children in Latino communities in East Los Angeles are coping with the lethal legacy of the now-closed Exide battery plant. And while California has undertaken the largest cleanup effort of its kind, frustrated neighbors continue to ask: How long is it going to take to remove the toxic soil and are the current cleanup methods the safest? How are our children’s lives and health still being affected in the meantime? Why are we being kept on the dark? Concerned neighbors, community advocates, state and local officials and public health experts convened in a radio forum aired from the studios of KPFK in Los Angeles and simulcast through Radio Bilingüe’s Latino public radio network. This is a repeat of the first hour.
Guests: Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, California State Assembly, Los Angeles,CA; Felipe Aguirre, Director, Comité Pro Uno, Maywood, CA; Joe Gonzalez, Neighbor, Boyle Heights, CA; Teresa Márquez, Chair, Mothers of East LA, Los Angeles, CA; Martha Jiménez, member, Community Advisory Committee, Clean up work, Los Angeles, CA.
