New Mexico in Flames.

Wednesday_673x324WEDNESDAY, MAY 11
PROGRAM # 9619 12:00 PM PT

New Mexico in Flames.

Firefighting crews are battling one of the largest wildfires in decades in New Mexico. The acres burned in New Mexico this year are more than the past two years combined. Several towns are being threatened by the flames and thousands of residents are under evacuation orders. President Biden approved a disaster declaration for the state. In this special coverage, as gusty winds fuel the fires, a city mayor on the frontlines of the fire warns residents about being ready to evacuate and move; the state historian talks about the extent of the devastation for these close-knit communities; a Red Cross community worker shares advice on how to prepare for evacuating the danger area, how to safely return home, where to find emergency help, and how to donate to help the survivors; and an emergency official gives tips on how to report damaged properties, and explains the emergency relief available from the federal government, and the services available for affected immigrant residents, and talks about the door-to-door efforts to help people apply for assistance.

Guests: Cynthia Cisneros, Community Volunteer Leader, New Mexico Red Cross, Albuquerque, NM; Dasha Castillo, Spokesperson, FEMA Media Relations, Washington, DC; Louie Trujillo, Mayor, Las Vegas, NM; Roberto Martinez Jr., New Mexico State Historian, Albuquerque, NM.
