Wildfires: The Devastation Begins.
Fueled by drought and climate change, the West Coast’s wildfire season started and so far these fires are proving to be more devastating than last year’s season, which broke records. The state is planning to invest more than ever to combat wildfires. The plan includes new firefighting equipment, more firefighter crews, wildfire response and mitigation. On Wildfire Awareness Month, analysts discuss how to prepare the home for the looming wildfire season. How can people protect themselves and their neighbors? How to retrofit homes and create defensible space against wildfires? What are insurance companies and the state doing to help homeowners who take steps to harden their homes and neighborhoods against wildfires? What can they do to incentivize fire mitigation? The state official who oversees the insurance industry answers those questions and explain mitigation safety efforts for neighborhoods. A top local health official talks about the costs on her health department of the devastation caused by last year’s fires. And a spokesperson for insurance companies gives tips on how to make homes resistant to fires and protect them against burning embers, maintain an adequate and affordable insurance coverage, review the insurance policy every year and keep a household inventory and video recording of personal belongings.
Guests: Ricardo Lara, California Insurance Commissioner, Los Angeles, CA; Elsa Mendoza, Director of the Monterey County Health Department, Pete Moraga, Spokesperson, American Property/Casualty Insurance Association – APCIA, Los Angeles, CA.
