The language of Race and Ethnicity in Medicine.
A renowned medical expert is questioning the use of current racial and ethnic categories to measure human similarities and differences. The current classification has led to the exclusion of non-White communities and to damaging health consequences. At a time when the number of mestizo or mixed-race people is increasing rapidly, many find it hard to fit into the US official Racial-Ethnic categories. In this conversation, the researcher discusses the history of the current model and his recommendations.
Guests: Dr. David Hayes-Bautista, Director, Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture (CESLAC), Professor of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA.
Historic Infrastructure Vote and Biden’s Plan on Clean Cars.
Hours after passing in the Senate a historic infrastructure bill with bipartisan support, Democrats gave the green light to a budget resolution on a historic investment in social and climate programs. Additionally, President Biden announced a plan for the transition to electric vehicles: By 2030, half of all vehicles sold in the US should be electric. After this momentous shift to electric cars: will people buy them? Will the nation’s infrastructure be ready to handle millions of new electric cars? The nation’s head of energy comments on those topics and on the UN’s climate change report warning about worsening global warming. Also, the owner of an electric car talks about his reasons to go battery-powered, his experience driving it and the costs and benefits.
Guests: Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, US Department of Energy, Washington, DC; Carlos Bello, Electric Car Owner and Public Health Educator, Bakersfield, CA.
