Extra Edition: Combating Deadly Heat Threat in the Fields (Program Repeat.)

Millions are under heat watches as a dangerous heat wave is warming the fields throughout the US South and Southwest. Exacerbated by climate change, temperatures for this summer season are expected to be worse than last one and outdoor workers are at extreme risk. Leading community health educators talk about the deadly effects of heat stress, who is most at risk of dying from heat stress, how to identify “danger days” and unsafe working conditions, and how the Covid pandemic has added another layer of risks to those workers who are exposed to extreme heat. They also discuss practical tips on how to deal with the heat and be aware of early signs of dehydration and heat stroke, and how to tell between symptoms of Covid-19 and heatstroke.

Guests: Nezahualcoyotl “Neza” Xiuhtecutli, General Coordinator/Executive Director, Farmworker Association of Florida, Apopka, FL; Andrés Villegas, Community Health Promoter, WeCount!, Homestead, FL.
