Champion of Sea Turtles.
A Puerto Rican environmental activist who helped lead a campaign to create a nature reserve to protect the leatherback sea turtle won the prestigious Goldman Prize in the US. Two decades ago, developers planned to build mega-resorts, golf courses, shopping malls, and luxury homes in oceanfront property along the north coast of Puerto Rico, endangering corals, lagoons, wetlands, leatherback turtles and a number of threatened species. A dedicated activist helped lead the fight to protect the natural corridor.
