Bolsonaro, Trump and the Amazon Rainforest.
This is a conversation with a recently recognized activist who for decades has been in the forefront advocating for the world’s rainforests and human rights. She comments on the challenges faced by the Amazon basin, the world’s largest tropical rain forest threatened by oil drilling, mining and agribusiness. Recently, new Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro met with Donald Trump to discuss partnering to open the Amazon to business investments, amid concerns of deforestation and devastation to indigenous land reserves.
Guest: Leila Salazar-López, Executive Director, Amazon Watch, San Francisco, CA.
California Bans Controversial Farm Pesticide. California is banning chlorpyrifos, a toxic pesticide commonly used in Central Valley crops that has been linked to brain damage. The process to phase it out will take up to two years. In the meantime, the state will help farmers to move to alternative pest-control methods. Environmental leaders from rural communities comment on the importance of this development.
Guest: Nayamin Martínez, Executive Director, Central California Environmental Justice Network, Fresno, CA; Angel García, Founding Coordinator, Tulare County Coalition Advocating for Pesticide Safety, Porterville, CA.
