New Mexico Wildfire Battle.

Monday_673x324MONDAY, MAY 16
PROGRAM # 9623 12:00 PM PT

New Mexico Wildfire Battle.

As New Mexico continues burning by the flames of the largest wildfire in the US, forecasters issue red flag warnings of extreme wildfire danger around the Southwest. The drought, strong winds and hot temperatures are combining to spark worse-than-normal wildfires in the West. In New Mexico, the fire has burned a landscape considered sacred because the forests, homes and ranches hold centuries-old traditions and cultural heritage. Local officials give a report on the devastation and warn about the red flags, emergency-aid officials talk about the shelters, food, clothing, trauma therapy and other aid available for the evacuated residents, and relief funds homeowners, business and residents are receiving. The program also includes news on efforts to pass a bill to improve FEMA’s response to wildfires and ensure cultural competency.

Guests: Louie A. Trujillo, Mayor, Las Vegas, NM; Cari Dighton, Spokesperson, American Red Cross, San Francisco, CA; Carmen Rodriguez, Spokesperson, FEMA, Albuquerque, NM; Annaliza Rivas Gourneau, Vice President of Strategy and Community Engagement, HELP New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM.
