At the age of 15, Maria Suárez was sold for $200. Her captor was murdered and she was falsely blamed for the crime. She spent nearly 28 years in prison. Today, Suárez is recognized as a hero and champion of victims of trafficking and slavery. Her testimony helped in passing the California Trafficking Victims Protection Act in 2005. She is now the leader of a philanthropic foundation.
