Children Facing “Toxic Stress.”
A number of migrant children, who have been victims of violence and trauma in their home countries, arrive to the US to face even more stress and anxiety while been separated from their families and interned in detention centers. This constant state of coping with experiences of terror leads to “toxic stress.” What can governments and families do to protect these traumatized children? A distinguished pediatrician questions the treatment these vulnerable children receive while in detention. Also, human rights advocates are launching a campaign urging immigration authorities to release families with young children who have faced prolonged detention, for more than 500 days.
Guest: Dr. Fernando Stein, President, American Academy of Pediatrics, Medical Director, Progressive Care Unit, Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston, TX, https://www.aap.org/; Marselha Gonçalves Margerin, Advocacy Director for the Americas, Amnesty International USA, Washington, DC, www.amnestyusa.org
