The Biden administration is proposing a new “public charge” regulation that would allow better access to safety net programs for immigrant families. Also, offering to pay the USCIS fees for those who apply for naturalization, a coalition is launching a nationwide campaign to encourage two million permanent residents to become citizens in 2022. In another story, after a two-decade battle, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed legislation granting undocumented immigrants drivers licenses. The Republican governor expresses concerns. Finally, California’s legislature hears comments on Gov. Newsom’s proposed plan to extend food assistance for every one older than 55, including undocumented immigrants in an effort to bring relief to families hit by hunger and poverty during the pandemic.
