Immigration Edition.
A federal operation revealed that hundreds of Mexican and Central American migrants were being forced, sometimes at gunpoint, to work in farms in Georgia. Members of Congress are now asking: how were the farms able to bring the victims to the U.S. using a lawful H-2A visa or “guest worker” program? A reporter brings news about these concerns and about the case and the victims of the crimes and the process to get T visas as witnesses. In other news, New York City became the largest city in the US to allow non-citizen residents to vote in local elections. A correspondent reports on the local and national ramifications of the legislation. Finally, the US Supreme Court heard arguments this morning in Garland v. González, a lawsuit that challenges the federal government’s policy of locking up thousands of immigrants for months or even years without the right to bond hearings to see if their detention is justified.
