TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 30
PROGRAM # 9457 12:00 PM PDT
Immigration Edition.
Public defenders and scholar in court and community activists in the policy arena are waging an uphill battle to repeal two immigration laws: the illegal-entry and re-entry laws or Sections 1325 and 1326 respectively. They argue those laws are unconstitutional. Recently, a federal judge in Nevada ruled that the original law had the clear intention of discriminating against Mexicans and that later versions continued the racism. A current case in Texas may end up in the US Supreme Court. A journalist and an immigration lawyer analyze the pervasive impact these laws have had in entire communities and the emerging movement challenging them in the courts, in Congress and the federal administration. In another story, California has launched the Higher Education Legal Services Project, state-funded unprecedented campaign to give students in community colleges free immigration legal services and support. A top promoter encourages students to apply for these services and dispel fears about “public charge.”
Guests: Debbie Nathan, Independent Reporter, El Paso, TX; Attorney Carlos Spector Calderón, Expert on Immigration and Political Asylum Law, El Paso, TX; Alonso Garcia, Special Projects Manager, Equity & Community Impact, Foundation for California Community Colleges, Sacramento, CA
