TUESDAY, AUGUST 24
PROGRAM # 9358 12:00 PM PDT
Immigration Edition.
This week, Congress begins work on the proposed budget resolution and reconciliation process that includes $107 billion to invest in immigration initiatives, including a pathway to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants, TPS holders, farmworkers, and essential workers. In other news, a federal judge in Texas blocked the Biden administration’s directives to ICE agents to focus detentions only on immigrants considered to be a threat to public safety or national security; he said the president does not have discretion to choose not to detain certain immigrants. In contrast, a federal judge in Nevada declared unconstitutional the federal statute that outlaws re-entry into the US citing the racist origins of the law. In more news: New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy today signed into law legislation that prohibits the state from entering into or renewing local and private contracts with ICE, marking a momentous victory in the movement to end the detention of immigrants. Finally, a legal expert provides advice to the thousands of DACA applicants who, after three years of challenges by the Trump administration, continue in limbo when a federal judge ruled against DACA and suspended their protections.
Guests: Claudia Flores, Associate Director of Policy and Strategy on the Immigration Policy team, Center for American Progress, Washington, DC; Others TBA.
