PROGRAM # 9295 12:00 PM PDT
Immigration Edition.
New York was the first state to move to provide universal representation to immigrants in detention. The New York Immigrant Family Unity Project is a first-of-its-kind program that provides publicly funded lawyers to every detained or incarcerated immigrant in the state. Advocates say that immigrants in the NYIFUP had been released from detention at almost twice the rate of unrepresented people at comparable immigration courts and it can serve as a model for the Biden administration as it seeks to deal with the crisis of representation. On another topic, most US residents support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. What about the members of Congress? Our news department is trying to find out. This program includes a report about the early results of our first survey and the reaction from a conservative leader.
Guests: Shayna Kessler, Senior Planner, Vera Institute of Justice, Center on Immigration and Justice, New York, NY; Wadi Gaitan, Communications Director and National Spokesperson, the LIBRE Initiative, Washington, DC
