Immigration Edition.
The Biden administration announced the closing of two detention centers in Georgia and Massachusetts, after revelations of widespread abuse, medical neglect and rights violations. At the same time, the Biden Administration has increased by 50% the number of people in immigration detention since coming into office. And while by comparison today’s numbers are lower than in recent years, human rights advocates are urging reforms to the enforcement system to minimize the impact of ICE enforcement on immigrant communities, and to rein in an agency with a history of abusing its authority. On another story, as rumors spread about a new immigration reform under Biden, California lawmakers are pushing a bill to help crackdown on fraud by unscrupulous immigration consultants against unsuspecting undocumented visa applicants.
