PROGRAM # 9253 12:00 PM PDT
Immigration Edition.
US Sen. Alex Padilla, the first Latino senator from California, is leading a push to include the Citizenship for Essential Workers Act in President Biden’s infrastructure package scheduled to be debated this summer. Sen. Padilla, who is holding this week the first hearing in the Senate on the matter, talks about how his bill may benefit more than five million immigrant workers in health care, agriculture, construction, food, energy, care-giving, and other essential sectors. Padilla warns that if cooperation of the Republican opposition on key bills such as immigration reform, voting rights or infrastructure is not achieved, this could lead to reforming or ending the filibuster rule. In addition, a national evangelist leader agreed that immigration reform is urgently needed this year but warned against including the bill in the huge infrastructure package. This program includes a fragment of an archival interview from 2008 with judge Cruz Reynoso, who died in recent days, interviewed when he joined Barack Obama’s Presidential Transition Team. He talks about the changes in attitude towards immigrants that were expected in the new administration.
