Tuesday_673x324TUESDAY, AUGUST 27
PROGRAM # 8681 12:00 PM PT

Immigration Edition.

Two Mayan leaders who fled from Guatemala fearing reprisal attacks from military or paramilitary groups linked to the government and were victims of extortion and threats while crossing Mexico, were forced to wait on the Mexican side after applying for asylum in El Paso. They share their story and a top expert on asylum law gives perspective on these and other recent cases on the US asylum court. On other news, major hotel chains pledge to not allow ICE to use their rooms to detain migrants, and on other story, after the Trump administration announced that is moving to detain migrant families indefinitely while they wait to see an immigration judge, California and 18 more states moved to challenge this measure in court. Finally, a Mexican writer who has written on the plight of migrant children chastises the Trump administration’s efforts to take the “profitable business of incarcerating undocumented people, especially children, to unimaginable extremes.”

Guests: Attorney Carlos Spector Calderón, Expert on Political Asylum Cases, El Paso, TX; Francisco Chávez Raymundo and Gaspar Cobo Coria, Guatemalan Mayan Community Organizers, Witnesses in the Case for Genocide against Former Guatemalan President Efraín Ríos Montt, Asylum Applicants in the US, Ciudad Juárez, MX; (Audio Segment) Valeria Luiselli, Mexican Writer, Author of the Book “Lost Children Archive”, New York, NY.
