TUESDAY, MAY 7
PROGRAM # 8601 12:00 PM PT
Immigration Edition.
Florida’s Republican legislature passed a ban against sanctuary-city policies; the controversial bill, requiring local police to cooperate with immigration officials, heads now to Gov. DeSantis desk, who has promised to sign it into law. In response, activists renew their travel alert, warning immigrants and people of color. On other story, press-freedom advocates called on the DHS about the targeting, surveillance, harassment and questioning of journalists by federal agents at the US-Mexico border. A national leader of journalists and a community activist who is undergoing a deportation process comment on those and other stories. And the only Latino candidate in the race for the presidential nomination talks about the central elements of his plan to reform the immigration system, warning that he will put a stop to the policies of cruelty and bring in policies of compassion, and will offer a Marshall Plan for the XXI Century in Central America.
Guests: Melissa Taveras, Spokesperson, Florida Immigrant Coalition, Miami, FL; (taped audio) Julián Castro, Democratic Presidential Candidate, Fresno, CA; Maru Mora Villalpando, Leader, Northwest Detention Center Resistance, Director, Latino Advocacy, Seattle, WA; Hugo Balta, President, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Hartford, CT.
