PROGRAM # 8171 12:00 PM PT
Transgender Count.
After public protests, the US Census Bureau is backtracking on its plans and will not remove a question on sexual orientation and gender identity from a national survey. A leading LGBT organizer comments on what this means. She also comments on legal challenges against Trump’s proposed ban on transgender people who serve in the military, the brutal murder of a young transgender person and the questions about not filing hate crime charges, and an analysis about a bill in California to extend labor protections to transgender workers. The author of the bill joins this program to explain his bill to protect transgender workers from employment discrimination and mandate anti-harassment training, a first in the nation.
Guests: Victoria M. Rodriguez-Roldan, J.D., Trans/GNC Justice Project Director, National LGBTQ Task Force, New York, NY; State Sen. Ricardo Lara, Democrat – Bell Gardens, Los Angeles, CA
DACA Renewal Deadline. A representative of a top national Latino organization reports on the final hours to help young immigrants to renew their DACA permits and the beginning of a new, coordinated national action to get Congress to bring to a vote a clean DREAM Act bill. Other guests also mentioned how transgender DACA will be among the worst hit by the end of the program, and state initiatives in California to help those who are left unprotected.
Guest: Laura Vazquez, Program Manager, Immigration Initiative, UnidosUS, Washington, D.C.
