PROGRAM # 8913 12:00 PM PT

Schools Reopening and Child Hunger.

The CDC, the nation’s health protection agency, has released guidelines for parents and teachers on reopening schools that were closed in response to the pandemic. School leaders say returning to school will be risky without treatment or a vaccine and warn of the challenges schools face when complying with the protection guidelines considering the increased lack of resources. They also comment on the first outcomes of distance learning activities. Finally, as Latino families struggle to replace school meals at home for their children, the emergency program known as Pandemic-EBT to deal with reduced access to school meals and child hunger has benefited a small fraction of the children in need. School leaders clarify that the use of these debit cards for food purchase does not affect the rules of “public charge” for immigrant families and urge parents who have not received the cards to apply.

Guests: Xilonin Cruz-Gonzalez, President, California School Boards Association, Azusa, CA; Jorge Aguilar, Superintendent, Sacramento City Unified School District, Sacramento, CA.

Packing the Courts Amid Pandemic. Civil rights leaders are calling for a pause in the process of judicial nominations and confirmations during the pandemic. The US is in the midst of the worst public health and economic crisis and Trump and McConnell are promoting more unqualified nominees who threaten civil rights, they say. An analyst discusses this topic.

Guest: Rafael Medina, Communications Manager, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Washington, DC.
