New teacher Strikes.

Almost a year after teachers in West Virginia went on a strike that sparked similar movements in other states, the educators are striking again in the state. Last week, teachers in Denver got a deal to raise their salaries after a three-day strike and now teachers in Oakland voted in favor of a strike, if they don’t get an agreement to improve salaries and spending on student services.

Guest: Chaz Garcia, Second Vice President, Oakland Education Association, Oakland, CA;

Unaccompanied Minors: Clinging to Education. Hundreds of unaccompanied minors fleeing extreme poverty and violence in their home towns in Central America are now living in Oakland, California, and struggle to go through school. Many come with strong desire to study, but are hindered by trauma and language barriers. Concerned about these young newcomers, teachers and counselors are managing to help them survive the new threats, beat the odds and stay in school. A journalist reported the story.

Guest: Zaidee Stavely, Education Reporter, Oakland, CA.
