Mendez v. Segregation Then and Now.

Before Brown v. Board of Education, the Mendez family fought and won in court a battle against Orange County school districts that had separate schools for White and Mexican students. Seven decades later, California is reportedly the most segregated state for Latino students. The student at the center of the landmark case for desegregation is now a renowned civil rights advocate and in this program she reflects on the history of the fight for integration and the current reality of segregation.

Guest: Sylvia Méndez, Plaintiff in Mendez v. Westminster, 2010 US Medal of Freedom, Fullerton, CA.

La Casa de Colores: An Epic Poem. Juan Felipe Herrera, the US Poet Laureate, talks about his wandering work around the nation’s schools encouraging young people to awaken their creative genius and write poems about their diverse experiences on family, migration, language, peace and democracy. Out of the many voices, one single epic poem will be created under the roof of La Casa de Colores.

Guest: Dr. Juan Felipe Herrera, US Poet Laureate, Fresno, CA.
