PROGRAM # 9827 11:00 AM PT
Extra Edition: Universal Pre-School State.
New Mexico voted last week to make pre-K a universal right. A ballot measure will make New Mexico the first state in the country to guarantee a constitutional right to early childhood education. The measure gives lawmakers the green light to provide a dedicated funding stream for universal preschool and child care. An advocate explains this plan and discusses the road ahead for citizens. How to watch political decisions and hold elected representatives accountable after having cast their ballots?
Guest: Olga Santana, Community Leader, Encuentro, Albuquerque, NM.
Abortion Rights Supported by Voters. Abortion-related measures were in the ballot of five states in the recent midterm elections. Voters in every state voted to protect abortion access and pro-abortion candidates were widely elected to a number of federal and state offices. An advocate says the Supreme Court ruling penalizing abortion helped galvanize a surge of reporductive-health-oriented voters.
Guest: Alejandra Soto, Director of Latino Media, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, New York, NY.
Climate Crisis and Loss of Species. In a recent report, a leading conservationist group is raising public attention on the devastating effects of the combined scourge of climate change and the decline of wildlife species. The massive loss of forests especially in Latin America and the Caribbean is leading to the loss of natural resources and biodiversity and is making people vulnerable to pandemics such as Covid.
Guest: Jordi Surkin, Conservation Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean, World Wildlife Fund.
