EXPULSION CRISIS IN RURAL SCHOOLS.

thursday-673x324

Kern County in California’s Central Valley, expels thousands of students more than any other county in the state. Many of the children forced to leave school come from immigrant and farm working families. A new bill in the state legislature by Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Long Beach) aims to help expelled students get a second chance at returning to school. Is expulsion an effective disciplinary measure? Why so many youth of color end up suspended?

Guests: Virginia Melchor, mother of expelled student, Lamont, CA; Elizabeth Aackhus, Staff Attorney, California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA), Delano, CA; Angelica Salinas, Supervisor of School Instruction, District level administrator, Arvin Union School District, Arvin, CA.
