Wave of Evictions; Wildfires.
As unemployment insurance benefits and rent and mortgage payments protections expired and the Covid-19 crisis continues raging, millions of Latinos and immigrants worry about being able to pay for housing and other basic needs. Housing advocates warn about an upcoming “tsunami of evictions” and about a “homeless pandemic.” They support the legislative bill AB 1436 and call for new emergency protections against evictions and economic aid for struggling tenants, especially the hardest-hit by the pandemic: Latinos and the elderly. On other news, tens of thousands of wildfire victims in Northern California are being evacuated to shelters as coronavirus fears are complicating the plans for the fire evacuees. Experts discuss the critical five steps to prepare for evacuation, where to find emergency aid, how to protect yourself from wildfire smoke, and how to stay safe from Covid infection.
