MONDAY, JUNE 14
PROGRAM # 9286 12:00 PM PDT
LGBTQ Pride Month.
LGBTQ Pride Month. The National LGBTQ Task Force has named Mayra Hidalgo Salazar its new national leader. As a teen ager, the Costa Rica-born organizer began leading young immigrants in Florida, and now she is ready to lead a wider movement, with the belief that “Trans, queer, black, people of color, and indigenous people are at the forefront of social change.” June represents Pride Month. In this conversation, she talks about her plans for the organization, discusses proposed national policies, like the Equality Act, to grant protection against discrimination, and expresses concerns about the administration’s attitude towards Central American migrants who seek asylum in the US, impacting many LGBTQ people at risk.
Guest: Mayra Hidalgo Salazar, Deputy Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force, Washington, DC.
Help for Renters and Homeowners. As the California Tenant Relief Act, that protects from eviction and provides assistance for renters and landlords, is about to expire on June 30, Gov. Newsom is proposing “the largest renter assistance package in the country” as part of his budget and legislators push a bill to establish a statewide eviction defense program to protect the state’s most vulnerable renters. Advocates discuss current barriers to access state funds for tenants in trouble. They are worried that while the state has approved funding for those at risk of eviction, many have applied and are still waiting to receive relief, and many more haven’t even applied.
Guests: Francisco Dueñas, Executive Director, Housing Now Coalition, Los Angeles, CA; Patricia Mendoza, Tenant Leader, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, Los Angeles, CA.
