Farm Worker Initiatives.

Hundreds of farmworker organizers met in Bakersfield, CA, for the United Farm Workers’ 20th Convention. The top union leader discusses highlights of key labor issues addressed at the convention as well as new national and international initiatives to protect farm workers, including a bill to provide farm workers overtime pay, a fair food initiative between advocates, growers and a major food retailer, and a program to tackle labor trafficking and slavery in US agriculture.

Michoacán: Secure Land? State and federal officials said that Michoacán, a Mexican state known for record breaking crime levels, has progressed to become the sixth most secure state in the nation. An analyst in Apatzingan, Mexico’s ground zero in narco violence, says the reality is that kidnappings and extortion continue being rampant but only 1% is reported.
