PROGRAM # 9714 12:00 PM PT

Climate and Tax Bill and Latinos.

President Biden is expected to sign a sweeping tax, health and climate package, after the House passed it. The bill, called the Inflation Reduction Act, includes funding for a number of programs to help the nation fight climate change and transition to a clean energy economy. Some programs will help lower-income families and disadvantaged communities adapt to rising temperatures by increasing the energy efficiency of their homes, cars, and communities. This report focuses on those less reported provisions.

Guest: José López Zamorano, News Reporter, Washington, DC.

New Plan Against Water Crisis. As California drought worsens and its water supplies are expected to shrink by 10% due to climate change, Gov. Newsom unveiled a new plan to invest big in creating more water by boosting the recycling of the state’s water supply, desalination of brackish water, as well as expanding water storage. What’s in the plan? What’s its expected impact on the water crisis?

Guest: Dr. Josué Medellín Azuara, Assistant Professor, Water Management and Environmental Policy Analyst, UC Merced, Merced, CA.

Calls for “Human Right to Water.” Dozens rallied in Sacramento to demand a “human right to water,” access to clean water for all Californians, as an estimated one million residents do not have access to safe drinking water. They demand approval of bills that would ensure water systems are fixed, water is clean, and help people pay off their water bills. They also ask for limits to water wells drilling to prevent depleting aquifers, and better representation of low-income communities on water boards. A leading advocate discusses the petitions.

Guest: Susana de Anda, Executive Director, Community Water Center, Visalia, CA.
