The federal government funding for the states’ jobless benefits is coming to an end. Meanwhile, in the Senate, parties are far apart on a possible plan to deal with the pandemic economic crisis. Still, recent comments by President Trump leave the door open for a deal with the Senate Democrats. What are the scenarios for upcoming days? A Washington-based correspondent provides a report. “The Financial Buoy.” As the pandemic hit, many people lost jobs, income and the costs of housing, childcare and health escalated. Without access to credit from banks, many are resorting to informal networks of family and friends. These collectivist exchanges of money, housing and caregiving are acting as a financial buoy to help people to stay afloat. Yet, those same collectivist values that help immigrants deal with emergencies, become a challenge once they get to the age of retirement. This is a conversation with a scholar who have researched this subject.
