The Elusive Rent Relief.

Wednesday_673x324WEDNESDAY, MAY 12
PROGRAM # 9254 12:00 PM PDT

The Elusive Rent Relief.

A federal judge struck down the nationwide moratorium on evictions imposed by the CDC last year and extended by President Biden until June 30. The moratorium was a key policy to help those tenants hit hardest by the pandemic crisis. An advocate of low-income people discusses the impact of this decision on renters. She also reports that thousands of Californians have been evicted from their homes despite eviction protections and a Covid-19 rent relief program established earlier this year. Finally, with the May 17 tax filing deadline approaching, a tax official advises low-income taxpayers about tax credits available for families that are struggling to pay for groceries, rent, and basic expenses.

Guests: Elena Popp, Executive Director, Eviction Defense Network, Los Angeles, CA; Irma Treviño, Communications and Liaison, US Internal Revenue Service, Harlingen, TX.
