Extra Edition: “Experts in their Fields.”
Farmworkers, and most of all Indigenous farmworkers, have been among the hardest hit by the pandemic. As essential workers, they constantly run the risk of getting infected when they show up to work during the pandemic, they lack access to health care, food and financial assistance and protection against eviction, and often they have lost hours of work. A new study, titled “Experts in their Fields,” shares stories collected from Indigenous farmworkers about their experience with Covid-19 and the needs they have to fully recover. Despite their knowledge and experience in the fields, their work is hardly valued, and despite being considered “essential workers” they were not protected from the worst risks of the pandemic. Leading members of the research team discuss their findings and recommendations.
