May Day. Also, Venezuela: Failed Coup or Uprising?

Wednesday_673x324WEDNESDAY, MAY 1
PROGRAM # 8597 12:00 PM PT

May Day.

May 1 has been declared a Day without Latinos in Wisconsin by immigrant- and labor-rights leaders, who are calling for no work, no school and no buying. Ten thousand are rallying on Madison’s Capitol and demand the legislature to restore driver licenses for immigrants, and about 180 businesses are reportedly closing their doors heeding the call. Groups in ten other states are also pushing for driver’s licenses. Also, labor leaders comment on policies that impact labor rights and protections, and give updates on a campaign in support of a Blue-Card bill to legalize farmworkers, and another one to get the hamburger chain Wendy’s to sign a fair-food agreement to improve payments for field workers.

Guests: Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director, Voces de la Frontera, Milwaukee, WI; Lucas Benítez, Coordinator, Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Immokalee, FL; Antonio Cortes, SJV Regional Director, United Farm Workers, Madera, CA.

Venezuela: Failed Coup or Uprising? Amid violent clashes in the streets, Venezuela’s opposition leader Juan Guaidó called for a military uprising to depose President Nicolás Maduro. As the attempted coup failed, high officials in the US White House talked about intervening in Venezuela through a possible “military action.” A Venezuelan-American scholar puts the news in perspective.

Guest: Dr. Miguel Tinker Salas, Professor of History and Latin American Studies, Pomona College, Los Angeles, CA.
