THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4
PROGRAM # 9160 12:00 PM PST
Raising Minimum Wage.
House and Senate leaders introduced the Raise the Wage Act, a legislation to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 by 2025 also included in President Biden’s 1.9 trillion relief package. Proponents say that despite working hard and risking Covid infection, many workers are paid poverty-level wages and can’t afford the most basic needs. Guests analysts comment about conservative arguments against raising the minimum wage, the efforts to pass the bill with a simple majority through the budget reconciliation process, the GAO report showing that millions of workers are receiving food stamps and Medicaid despite working full time, many of them employees of giant corporations like Walmart and McDonald’s, and the battle to get all the Democratic votes in the Senate.
Guests: Rocio Saénz, Executive Vice President, SEIU International, Washington, DC; Dr. Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda, Professor, Chicana and Chicano Studies Department, Director and Founder of North America Integration and Development Center, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA.
