Accomplished artists from different backgrounds and perspectives met at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in the summer to discuss the role that the California experience played in their musical life, and the power of music to heal and connect different racial communities. The conversation, before a live audience, was part of the festival’s program Sounds of California.
Guests: John Santos, Afro-Cuban Music Percussionist, Latin Jazz Performer, and Leader of the Band John Santos Sextet; Oliver Wong, Music Journalist, DJ, and Professor of Sociology at CSU Long Beach; Adriel Luis, First Curator of Digital and Emerging Media for the Smithsonian’s Asian Pacific American Center, Washington, DC.
