REMEMBERING SINGER RAFAEL MANRÍQUEZ.

monday-673x324

This Labor holiday special is a tribute to Rafael Manríquez Silva, one of the leading exponents of Chilean folk music and nueva canción in the United States who recently passed away. Originally from Santiago, this songwriter and music journalist relocated to Berkeley, California in 1977, after the coup d’état that overthrew President Salvador Allende. With remarkable skill on string instruments – from the guitar to the charango – Manríquez sang about the struggles and hopes of working-class people throughout this continent, and performed all over Europe and the Americas.

Guests: Dan Sheehy, Director and Curator, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, Falls Church, VA, http://www.folkways.si.edu, Fernando Torres, Co-founder, La Peña Cultural Center, Berkeley, CA, http://lapena.org, Carlos Barón, Professor of Theater Arts, San Francisco State University, San Francisco, CA, http://theatre.sfsu.edu
