Natalia Toledo: Mexican Zapotec Poet.
The world celebrates International Mother Language Day, a time to raise awareness about treasured languages that are at risk of vanishing. On this occasion, Mexican indigenous poet Natalia Toledo talks about her Zapotec roots, the role of moms and grandmas in passing on cultural values and oral traditions, her quest to find the soul of words, and to use the power of books and creativity, and the ways she overcame racism and classism and fought for her mother language while growing up in society’s mainstream in Mexico City.
