Indigenous Woman Wins “Green Nobel”.

wednesday-672x324

Ruth Buendía Mestoquiari, a young indigenous woman from Peru, was awarded the 2014 Goldman Prize. Buendía shares details about her life as a young girl, the loss of her father, the encounters with the Shining Light guerrilla and having to live apart from her mother. She states how her past led her to become one of the first women to lead the Ashaninka indigenous people. Buendía stopped the construction of two mega-dams in the Peruvian Amazon. The projects would have flooded the region, where thousands of indigenous people lived. After strong opposition from indigenous communities, the Peruvian government and energy company cancelled the projects.
