The Tradiciones series of the musical label Smithsonian Folkways Recordings releases this week an album celebrating the story of women in mariachi music and the groundbreaking role Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles has played in this resurgent musical movement. In this album, the all-female ensemble interprets popular sones jaliscienses and canciones rancheras. In its nearly 25 years, Reyna de Los Angeles has garnered great acclaim and top awards.

“A La Mar.” California-based Mexican roots band Los Cenzontles continues celebrating while innovating some of the best Mexican traditions. In this conversation, the leader of the group talks about “A La Mar,” a recent album mixing sounds of indigenous Mexican music with early European music from medieval Spain, ingredients that galvanized the music of Mestizo Mexico of today. He also comments on a recent tribute to migrants, a rendition of a classic George Harrison song in a Mexican Son style.
