Mariachi: Humanity’s Cultural Heritage.
On occasion of the anniversary of UNESCO’s recognition of mariachi (the string, song and trumpet musical ensemble) as humanity’s cultural heritage, an expert reflects on the meaning of this recognition. He also talks about his books on the history of this emblematic Mexican tradition and how the tradition is also rooted on what’s now the US Southwest. He also comments on the growing awareness among Mexicans about mariachi music thanks to the efforts of Mexicans living abroad to elevate and celebrate mariacheros as a symbol of community identity.
