The Oscars 2019 and “Roma.”
The movie “Roma” is taking the Academy Awards by storm. It is the Spanish-language picture with the most nominations in the history of the Oscars. And Mexican indigenous actress Yalitza Aparicio has already made history with her nomination for best actress. A media watchdog and organizer of a recent event honoring artists for their positive portrayal of Latinos in media comments on the highlights of the ceremony, the Latino nominees and winners, and the incidents of racial hatred in Mexico that have surrounded the success of the lead actress. The manager of a radio station in Aparicio’s hometown talks about the grand events organized in Oaxaca to celebrate the recognition to the teacher-turned-actress; and a leader of domestic workers says the movie, in addition to honoring the “true heroes in our homes,” it also promotes the debate on the most critical issues around domestic work.
