THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6
PROGRAM # 8798 12:00 PM PT
Los Cancioneros del Valle.
Folk musicians from the Rio Arriba area of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado have been passing centuries-old songs and stories from generation to generation through oral tradition. In Antonito, one of the oldest towns in Colorado’s San Luis Valley, a family with deep roots in the Rio Arriba region keeps singing the cancionero, the song book of their grandparents. In this conversation with three generations of musicians, Salomón López recalls his mother’s songs and the times when he performed in “chivirrines”, house dances; Rosa Vialpando promotes songs that “give voice to women singers” and affirms that just as “blood calls, so does music call”; and Rubén Domínguez talks about his projects to record and rescue the music that gives him inspiration,”the music of our roots”. The trio sings “alabados,” wedding marches and traditional songs.
Guests: Salomon López, Rosa Vialpando, Ruben Domínguez, Los Cancioneros del Valle, San Antonio, CO.
