PROGRAM # 8682 12:00 PM PT
“Los Camperos: De Ayer para Siempre.”
Legendary mariachi ensemble and cultural institution Los Camperos is releasing a new album, the first under the leadership of Jesús “Chuy” Guzmán, after the passing of iconic leader Natividad “Nati” Cano. The album’s repertoire includes canción ranchera, son jarocho, boleros, and sones jaliscienses performed in the classic mariachi tradition that is the signature of this Grammy-winning group. The new director talks about his years as a young mariachero in the Baja California border area and his eventual search for the iconic group Los Camperos, and reflects on the legacy of Nati, who had a vision of a “mariachi with soul and heart.” The co-producer says this album is a display of a “living tradition, new wine in old vessels, new songs in old molds.”
Guests: Jesús “Chuy” Guzmán, Musical Director, Los Camperos, Los Angeles, CA; Daniel Sheehy, Co-Producer, Album: “Los Camperos: De Ayer para Siempre”, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, Washington, DC.
